The distinction was awarded in Brussels, at the European Week of Regions and Cities. From a group of 104 projects that were supported by EU funds, 23 finalists were chosen divided into five categories. The "Bio Centre: biorefineries, biofuels and bioproducts," created by BLC3, from Oliveira do Hospital, brings to Portugal the distinction of the Committee.

Managing Authorities and Project Managers (with approval of the Managing authority) can send in their applications to become one of the next RegioStars Winners and take home a prestigious trophy. The objective of RegioStars is to identify good practice in regional development and to highlight original and innovative projects which could be inspiring to other regions and project managers.
