Under Call for Applications for structural interventions to prevent landslides on slopes, code POSEUR-10-2015-29, application concerning the work of stabilizing Santarém slopes was approved. Santarém municipality was one of the potential beneficiaries of this Call for Applications, in addition to Vila Nova de Gaia Municipality.
With a total investment cost of 5,856,815.54 euros, the project will feature a co-financing from the Cohesion Fund of 4,978,293.22 euros.
Through a multidisciplinary approach it is intended that the slopes are stabilized in a sustainable way and integrating the past, present and future of the city of Santarem. On the one hand the accident at the hillside of Santa Margarida, in August 2014, where the land slip invaded EN 114, forcing the traffic to be closed in that way since that date and on the other hand, the imminent risk of a similar accident on the slopes of Ribeira de Santarém (ERS3), with serious consequences for the circulation in road (EN 3-4) as well as the urgent need to restore the functioning of the eduction pipe collapsed in the accident in late 2012 (ERS4 and ESB), are added reasons to justify the urgent need for the implementation of stabilization works on these slopes.
With the proposed interventions ensure the maintenance and sustainability of the project, therefore it is considered that the slip risk of disturbed slopes will be permanently deleted. With the implementation of the project the risks of instability of disturbed slopes will be mitigated. Intervention to perform for the purpose of stabilization of Santarém Slopes falls under PO SEUR Axis 2, Investment Priority 5.2 "Investment promotion to address specific risks, ensuring disaster resilience and develop management systems disasters" foreseen in the typology" Structural Investments to face high risk situations in terms of mass movements on slopes whose imminent risk of collapse is likely to cause serious accidents and disasters.
