Pursuing the major strategic goals of the National Forest Fire Protection Defense Plan (PNDFCI) whose implementation targets were established through efforts of all entities with responsibility in this area and aimed globally to 2018, the reduction in the area covered by forest fires to levels comparable to the average of Mediterranean countries. The increased likelihood of forest fires, boosted by climate change, implies a greater intervention capacity in combating these phenomena, which have caused considerable material damage and loss of lives.
Civil protection infrastructure network is based largely on buildings belonging to fire departments. The fact that many of these infrastructures were designed several decades ago, becomes currently dysfunctional and obsolete in many cases, to deal with an increasing number of operational attributes that are now imposed. The fire stations as a key operating unit in terms of their respective land area are essential to raise the level of readiness of human resources and equipment.
