PO SEUR Management Authority approved the application on the Weather Radar of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This application, from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA), falls within the scope of Call for Applications code POSEUR-08-2015-20 within the Investment Priority 5.1 "Granting investment support for adaptation to climate change, including ecosystem-based approaches" on Axis II of the Programme.
IPMA has responsibilities on country level in the areas of the sea and weather, focusing its research efforts on projects reverting to direct applications to use in operational activity, the search for a progressive improvement of the information to its users. The expansion of the national network, with the radar installation of Madeira and the 3 mainland radars already operating beyond the local meteorological support, will strengthen the support to air traffic and national and international shipping, contributing to an improvement in safety transport with an increase in the economy in general. The work associated with the operation will consist in the implementation of a tower 32 meters high, on top of which to install the antenna of the weather radar, protected by a radome.
The radar will allow meteorological surveillance throughout the Autonomous Region of Madeira as well as the improvement and optimization of current meteorological models with equal performance for all municipalities in the district of Madeira and will cover a circular area with boundary near the Wild islands, centered Porto Santo. The information collected with the radar relative to the amount and intensity of precipitation and wind, in spatial scales and temporal resolution and the knowledge that you can get the weather systems that affect the weather, in the archipelago of Madeira, will contribute to the existence of a robust data platform, technical and scientific, essential in adapting to climate changes, which documented the highest number of episodes of heavy rainfall and prolonged dry periods.
With a total cost investment of 3,532,603.64 euros and an Eligible Investment of 3,382,741.27 euros, the project will have a contribution from the Cohesion Fund of 2,875,330.08 euros.
